Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteaks (Printable)

Savory ground beef with sweet peppers, onions, and melted provolone on buttery toasted rolls.

# Ingredient List:

→ Meat & Cheese

01 - 1 lb ground beef (85% lean)
02 - 4 slices provolone cheese

→ Vegetables

03 - 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
04 - 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
05 - 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
06 - 2 cloves garlic, minced

→ Breads & Condiments

07 - 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
08 - 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
09 - 1 tbsp olive oil

→ Seasonings

10 - 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
11 - 1 tsp salt
12 - 1/2 tsp black pepper

# Steps:

01 - Set oven to 375°F for toasting the rolls and melting the cheese.
02 - Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and bell peppers, cooking until softened and lightly caramelized, approximately 7–8 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 additional minute.
03 - Push vegetables to the side of the skillet. Add ground beef and break apart while cooking until browned completely, about 6–8 minutes. Drain excess grease if necessary.
04 - Combine beef with vegetables. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Stir thoroughly and continue cooking for 2 minutes to meld flavors.
05 - Cut hoagie rolls in half lengthwise. Spread softened butter on cut sides. Place on baking sheet and toast in oven until lightly crisp, 3–5 minutes.
06 - Fill each roll with equal portions of hot beef mixture. Place a slice of provolone on top. Return to oven for 2–3 minutes until cheese is fully melted and bubbly.
07 - Remove from oven and serve hot. Optionally garnish with pickled peppers or additional condiments as desired.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • Ground beef cooks faster than thinly sliced steak but delivers the same hearty satisfaction
  • Everything happens in one skillet so cleanup is minimal
  • The cheese gets perfectly melty while the bread turns golden and crisp
02 -
  • Do not skip draining the excess fat or the bread will become soggy within minutes
  • Keep the vegetables moving in the pan so they caramelize evenly instead of burning
  • The rolls need to be fully toasted before filling or they will fall apart under the weight of the beef
03 -
  • Slice your vegetables as thinly as possible for the best texture and fastest cooking
  • Use room temperature butter so it spreads easily without tearing the bread
  • Let the beef rest for a minute after cooking so it absorbs all those seasonings
